Dr. Karl Knopf has taught corrective exercise to the disabled and older adults for over 40 years at Foothill College where he was the Coordinator of the Adaptive Fitness Therapy AA Degree Program at the college. I am a graduate of his program. Dr. Karl has literally written the book on boomer and senior fitness as he has authored over 15 books, as well as numerous articles.
Dr. Knopf was the founder and has been the President of Fitness Educators of Older Adults for over 15 years and is currently on the Board of the Sit and Be Fit Organization. Dr. Knopf is also contributor to the International Sports Science Association courses on Fitness Therapy and Senior Fitness.
Throughout Dr. Knopf’s career he has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and has been quoted in major newspapers such LA Times, San Jose Mercury and Washington Post. He has served as a consultant to the State of California, Stanford University, Time Life Medical and he even contributed a chapter to a book by Richard Simmons. He is a frequent guest on radio and often speaks at Wellness Events.
In this interview, Dr. Karl shares his views on fitness, fun, retirement and staying healthy, with a focus on us boomers. To me, Dr. Karl is the Robin Williams of fitness. He is never at a loss for words and his words are golden. People would take his courses just to hear his lectures. Check this out, I guarantee you’ll be wanting more.

Hi, Jim!
-I found out about you from Karl's FB page recommendation. I'm just beginning to explore your site and like what I read. Is the "Essential Boomer" a new site?
-Like you, I took several classes from Karl and also interned with him. I worked at Foothill College, got to know Karl better after having taken his courses, and subsequently helped to proofread and edit one of his books several years ago. We also shared similar experiences with caregiving for our parents and he gave my family some life-saving advice regarding my mother's medical care.
-I agree when you wrote, "He is never at a loss for words and his words are golden. People would take his courses just to hear his lectures." I always admired how Karl would make each student feel special, especially the older adult students in his off-campus classes where I interned, and he would always thank them for coming no matter how late a few of them came. He knew it was hard for some of them to get there but always encouraged and congratulated them for their attendance. His insights and humor are always priceless. I have the utmost respect for Karl's mission in life and how he has shared it with his humorous and generous spirit—always natural and genuine.
-I wish you continued success and fun with "Essential Boomer" and look forward to your future insights. I was especially touched by "A Memorial Day Tribute to My Father." And, being new to IPAs, I enjoyed reading your reviews and ratings. You're a very good writer who chooses diverse interesting topics and profiles—Heck, Yes!
Make it an Essential summer, Jim 😉 Tricia
